How to start photography with a deliberate 12-frame study

Phone or camera you already own
Change one choice per frame
One selected and lightly edited photo
Use a phone or camera you already own to photograph one subject twelve ways, understand focus and exposure, select one frame, and edit it lightly.
What you need to know
-
Give the photograph one clear subject
Choose a stationary object in a safe, permitted place. Decide what should attract attention before adjusting a setting or pressing the shutter.
-
Begin in Auto mode
Clean the lens, use the main camera and let Auto handle technical choices while you learn framing, focus, light and timing.
-
Change one variable per set
Compare distance, viewpoint, subject placement and exposure in four sets of three. A controlled study teaches why one frame works.
-
Focus first, then adjust brightness
Tap the subject or half-press the shutter to focus. Use exposure compensation only after deciding which detail must remain sharp.
-
Keep awareness outside the frame
Stop walking before looking at the screen, stay away from traffic and edges, respect people and property, and never approach wildlife for scale.
Choose a safe subject and prepare the camera
Work in daylight at a familiar, permitted place with room to stand still. A bench, bicycle, doorway, sculpture, tree trunk or ordinary household object outside can hold its pose while you experiment.
Make the deliberate 12-frame study
State the intention in one sentence, such as “Show the texture of the weathered bench.” Keep the subject and light consistent, and make four sets of three frames while changing only distance, angle, or exposure compensation in each set.
Select one frame and make a restrained edit
Leave the site, take a short break and review on the largest screen available. Do not judge by zooming immediately into tiny technical flaws. First ask which frame communicates the original sentence fastest.
Avoid common mistakes and choose the next exercise
The common first mistake is searching for a camera setting before deciding on a subject.
